PateleyNet

The Network

Dales IT Ltd has installed a Satellite Broadband connection and is happy to share out this connection using a wireless mesh network, to other residents of Pateley Bridge and beyond. This is the same system that is in use in Darley, Glasshouses, Birstwith and Hampsthwaite.

Mesh Network

Diagram of mesh network Mesh nodes are currently installed in Pateley Bridge, Bewerley and Glasshouses. More planned for the High Street and beyond. If there is demand elsewhere, we will supply other mesh boxes and antennas when demand requires it. Location of current sites can be seen here.

So what do I need to connect?

The equipment needed to connect will depend in a large part upon where you are located, how strong the signal is, and the number of computers you wish to connect. Dales IT are able to advise on what is needed, but typical solutions will either be a wireless network card for a single computer, with an external antenna if needed, or an ethernet to wireless converter, again with an external antenna if needed.

There is no funding behind this project, so we are having to pay for it as we go. There is a one-off connection charge of £50 +VAT which goes to paying for the meshboxes which are the infrastructure of the mesh network, and a monthly charge of £22 for home users, or £44 for businesses connecting a network of computers. Both of these charges are similar to the rates charged for ADSL where it is available.

It is hoped that as more subscribers sign up, we will be able to reduce these rates further once the costs have been covered. Costs have been reduced already.
